What Does Quality Inspection Mean in 3D Printing?

Quality inspection in 3D printing is the process of checking that each printed part meets the intended design, dimensions, surface finish, and functional requirements. Whether it's a custom cat flap cover or a complex bracket, the goal is to catch errors, imperfections, or tolerance issues before anything leaves the workshop.

At Moose 3D®, we carry out visual and dimensional checks, validate printer performance, and ensure parts are printed cleanly, safely, and reliably — every time.

Our Quality-First Process

From design review to final inspection, quality is built into every stage.

Design Verification

We inspect submitted files for errors, manifold issues, and general printability. We may reach out if improvements are needed.

Process Planning

Models are queued and scheduled based on material, print time, and complexity to ensure efficient, consistent results.

Quality Control

Every item is visually and dimensionally checked against order specs before dispatch.

Machine Maintenance

Our machines are regularly calibrated, maintained, and cleaned to deliver dependable and repeatable quality.

Our Quality Commitments

Everything we do is designed to ensure your order arrives accurate, clean and ready to use.

Fair Reprint Policy

Up to 3 free reprints for custom jobs that need fitting adjustments.

Tolerance Targets

Most parts are printed to ±0.2mm accuracy, depending on material and geometry.

Clean Handling

Parts are printed, cleaned, and handled using gloves to minimise surface marks.

Inspection Checklist

Each print is checked for warping, defects, layer quality, and key dimensions.

What We Check & What We Don’t

At Moose 3D®, we strive for the highest quality across every print. That said, some elements are within our inspection process, while others fall outside our scope. Here’s a quick guide to help you understand what we check—and what we don’t.

✅ We Check

  • Critical dimensions (±0.2mm)
  • Surface finish (major blemishes)
  • Warping, stringing, adhesion
  • Layer consistency
  • Support removal quality
  • Material authenticity

❌ We Don’t Check

  • Fit with unknown parts
  • Colour deviations from screen mockups
  • Assembly or mechanical function
  • End-use suitability or certification
  • Compatibility with third-party hardware
  • Prints based on poor STL designs

Quality Inspection FAQ

Answers to some of the most common queries about how we inspect 3D printed parts.

Do you inspect every 3D printed item before shipping?

Yes. Every part goes through a visual and dimensional inspection to check for warping, defects, and major inconsistencies before it leaves the workshop.

What is the standard tolerance for 3D prints

Most parts are printed to ±0.2mm, depending on material and geometry. Tight tolerances should be flagged during ordering so we can accommodate them.

Are your prints ISO certified?

No. Moose 3D® is not ISO 9001 certified, but many of its core quality assurance practices are followed — including traceability, inspection logging, and calibration routines.

Do you clean or post-process the parts?

Yes. Supports are removed, parts are wiped clean, and handled with gloves. However, surface perfection is not guaranteed unless specified.

What if my part doesn’t fit correctly?

We offer up to 3 free reprints for custom orders that need fitting adjustments, as long as you provide updated measurements or photos.

Can I request specific checks or quality levels?

Absolutely. You’re welcome to request custom inspection steps, higher tolerances, or particular finish requirements — just let us know when ordering.

Do you check how my part fits with other objects?

Only if we have the mating part or model. Otherwise, we inspect to the provided dimensions but can't guarantee fit with untested components.

What don’t you check?

We don’t verify part function or test assemblies unless parts are provided. We also don’t guarantee cosmetic perfection on hidden or support-facing surfaces.
